With Central Illinois seeing its coldest temperatures of the season, it’s more important than ever to be prepared in case you would get stranded while driving.

The cold weather can put a strain on your car’s battery and engine. Whenever temperatures reach around zero, it’s important to let your car warm up before taking off.

Also, make sure you’re traveling on a full tank of gas. If you do get stuck, you can run your car in short intervals to stay warm.

You’ll also want to have an emergency kit handy with things like a shovel, cell phone charger, blankets and booster cables.

If you do get stuck, police say it’s best to stay in your car until help arrives. Your car gives you an outer layer of protection in case another car would hit you, or if the car would start to roll.
